Week 8 Contest Winners!

Posted in Uncategorized by sarahtheunicorn on September 6, 2010

Congrats to the Summer Music Junkie Contest Week 8 winners!

1) Marq Romero – CMJ 2010 Music Marathon badge
2) Michelle Fantus – CMJ 2010 Music Marathon badge
3) Gummo McGraw

Here’s what some of our winners had to say about their favorite show of the week:

Marq:

My favorite show last week was at Electric Zoo. It was seeing The Glitch Mob. Their set was so hard and electric it had everyone going nuts. From a DJ crew to a live electronic band I think these guys are doing something that most artists are not doing yet. They were nice enough to hang out afterwards and hand out cd’s and take pics with the fans.

Michelle:

Invited by a friend, I didn’t know what to expect before the Zach Williams show at Bowery Ballroom on Thursday 9/2/10.  I hadn’t heard of him before, and I expected that he’d have a generic sound like many other self-named, acoustic, singer-songwriter acts.  He set himself apart and certainly surprised me with his impressive vocal range, heartfelt lyrics, and talented backing band (especially the female backing vocalist!).  The venue was filled with an audience who danced and echoed his lyrics; truly demonstrating the connection he had with them.  When I got home later that night, I immediately bought his latest album, Story Time.  The songs sound just as good recorded and I can’t wait to see him play in the city again.

This marks the end of the Summer Music Junkie Contest! We’ve had a great summer with amazing shows and prizes. Thanks to everyone who participated, you guys rock! We will soon be announcing the lucky person who has been crowned Summer Music Junkie, so stay tuned!

2) Valerie – CMJ Music Marathon badge
3) the wild honey pie

A special shout out to this week’s points leaders – Amber, Dean, and Edwina!

Here’s what some of our winners had to say about their favorite show of the week:

Valerie:

This past week I saw the Camp Rock 2 Tour, featuring the Jonas Brothers. I had caught a free show of theirs in NYC last year and was impressed by their talent live but it wasn’t the full concert experience with lights and pyrotechnics so when I saw these tickets were on sale for $10 my friends and I jumped on them. Sitting through the Camp Rock songs were boring but the Jonas Brothers honestly blew me away. I only know a few songs by them but I’d say it was well worth my $10. Oh, and did I mention it was POURING RAIN during the entire show? Everyone left completely and hopelessly soaked to the bone, but man was it fun!

The Summer Music Junkie contest is coming to a close this week but we’ve still got some great prizes left, including CMJ Marathon Badges and Two Doors Cinema Club tickets! Here’s your last chance to earn points and win… good luck!

Week 6 Contest Winners!

Congrats to the Summer Music Junkie Contest Week 6 winners!

1) Jennifer – CMJ 2010 Music Marathon Badge
2) Ashely Harris – Built to Spill at RocksOff tickets
3) Clara Hung – CMJ 2010 Music Marathon
4) Jermaine Onwubere – Soulive at Webster Hall tickets

A special shout out to this week’s points leaders – Dean, Amber, and Joe.

Here’s what some of our winners had to say about their favorite show of the week:

Jermaine:

My favorite show this week was The English Beat at Webster Hall on Sat. August 21.  “I Confess,” I’ve been listening to The English Beat since I was 12 years old and never got a chance to see them live until this past weekend.  It was great hearing live versions of all of their songs that I had memorized so long ago while listening to my walkman on the school bus or on my record player while dancing in front of my bedroom mirror like Ranking Roger.

Jennifer:

Titus Andronicus made a humid night a bit more sweaty with a raucous set at Glasslands on Wednesday. The unbearably hot venue made for the perfectly appropriate environment for these rabble-rousers’ performance, which mixed tunes from both “The Airing of Grievances” and “The Monitor.” While the barroom intimacy of this show was unbeatable, I definitely look forward to the band’s Webster Hall show later in September.

We’ve got some great prizes this week including CMJ Marathon Badges and backstage passes to Mystery Jets so keep earning points for your chance to win! Good luck!

Which Shows Are People Tweeting and Taking Photos At?

Posted in Summer Music Junkie by superglued on August 19, 2010

We’ve been running the NYC Summer Music Junkie contest since mid-July and its been interesting to see what avid concertgoers are doing at shows. Services like Twitter and Foursquare along with cameras have grown in popularity as more people document and share their experiences. While some still dance and sing along to their favorite songs,  these folks are snapping away and posting tweets to broadcast out to friends in real-time.

Summer Music Junkie participants have been earning points for things like posting tweets, photos, videos and setlists. So which shows have people been using their devices at?

Tweets

The top tweeted shows are based on the number of tweets with matching terms such as artist name and venue for specific shows. We began tracking on July 11th. It’s interesting how most of the shows were in outdoor venues (7 of the top 10) and that several were free. And it wasn’t just indie rock – hip hop and pop music fans are tweeting too!

Photos

Participants in the Summer Music Junkie contest have been posting some amazing photos from shows throughout the summer. The chart below shows the top summer shows based on number of photos posted to SuperGlued. This is more reflective of the SuperGlued community than general concertgoers.  Many of the shows are in smaller venues with lesser known artists including The Love Language, Kid Congo and Pregnant.

We’ll be posting a recap of the contest in a few weeks. In the meantime, if you took any photos or videos at a show this summer, share them on SuperGlued. And maybe you’ll win a prize!

Here’s what some of our winners had to say about their favorite concerts of the week:

Alan:

This week, I caught three shows at Prospect Park, each featuring remarkable and remarkably different female singers. Alison Mosshart, the dark, sexy singer from The Dead Weather chain smoked throughout her performance, parading around the stage and flopping to the ground like a relic from the heyday of rock ‘n roll. Emily Haines from Metric offered a brighter, more upbeat performance. But no one would top Sharon Jones. A ball of energy packed into a disco-ball-dress, her high-intensity performance delivered to an enormous crowd at the Prospect Park bandshell should earn her the title “The hardest working woman in show business.”

Hana: Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings @ Prospect Park on August 7th

Packed a picnic and sat on a blanket right outside the Bandshell at Prospect Park. Had a great view of the crowd and the stage. Atmosphere was amazing and Sharon Jones sparkled on stage, literally.

Edwina: Salt N Pepa / Naughty By Nature / Slick Rick @ Wingate Field on August 2nd

One of the best shows I saw last week was Salt N Pepa/Naughty By Nature/Slick Rick concert at Wingate Field. I grew up with music by all three acts but hadn’t seen any of these performers live until last Monday. It was a blast and the fact this show was free still blows my mind!

We’ve got some amazing prizes this week including CMJ badges, tickets to  Rock The Bells, and tickets to Kele. So go to shows this week and post recaps on SuperGlued and keep on earning points!

Week 3 Contest Winners!

  2. Eric – CMJ 2010 Music Marathon badge
  3. Alan Maginn – CMJ 2010 Music Marathon badge
  4. Edwina – ZZ Top tickets (donated prize to a bigger fan!)
  5. Alexis Maindrault – Dead Weather tickets
  6. Grannock – Black Lips tickets

A special shout out to this week’s points leaders – Amber, Dean, and Hula Doll – for continuing to dominate the contest.

Here’s what some of our winners had to say about their favorite concerts of the week:

Alan: Gogol Bordello at Williamsburg Waterfront on July 30th

Friday night’s lineup at the Williamsburg Waterfront was stupendous. I’ve seen Les Claypool play with both of the other performers – Skerik as part of the Frog Brigade lineup and Gogol Bordello (and Kirk Hammett from Metallica) as the Superjam group at Bonnaroo in 2008 – but never with Primus. Although the Primus crowd was as violent as I’d feared, the music was spot on. I was also really pleased with how Gogol is sounding these days. A lot of their new tunes have an almost “Rage Against the Machine” quality to them.

Alexis:

Last week was exceptional for outdoor concerts. From Wayne Coyne from the Flaming Lips riding a bear in Summerstage to Les Claypool of Primus as a Mad Tatter from outer space on the Willamsburg Waterfront with the smooth baritone voice of Matt Berninger and the deep blues of the Black keys in between.

We’ve got some amazing prizes this week including CMJ badges and tickets to  ZZ Top. So go to shows this week and post recaps on SuperGlued and keep on earning points!

Week 2 Contest Winners!

Posted in Summer Music Junkie by sarahtheunicorn on July 27, 2010

Congrats to the Summer Music Junkie Contest Week 2 winners!

  1. Joe Saturday – CMJ 2010 Music Marathon badge
  2. Hula Doll – CMJ 2010 Music Marathon badge
  3. Amber G. King – The Morning Benders/Black Keys tickets
  4. Eric – Belle & Sebastian tickets (he has generously donated to to a bigger fan!)
  5. Dean Keim – Black Francis tickets

Here’s what our winners had to say about their favorite concert of the week:

Dean: Crowded House at Bowery Ballroom on July 19th

A truly remarkable performance! Neil Finn was clearly the man in charge of Crowded House, and his intent was clearly to keep things loose, especially given the small intimate venue of Bowery Ballroom, considering CH fans alone would have sold out a hall many times larger in a heartbeat. Even their huge 80’s hit “Don’t Dream it’s over” from their first self-titled hit started somewhat stiff by it’s end was swirling into an imrov with surprisingly Pink Floydian guitar by Neil himself. Another big hit, “Private Universe” from their ’93 album Together Alone was far more aggressive and experimental that the studio original, with a driving drum track and psychedelic sounds that swerved it far from it’s studio original, even churning effortlessly into “Black & White boy” from the same album. He kept the set list to many many fan favorites and even rarities, as well as covers of everything from Neil Young’s “Down By The River” and George Jones’ “The Jet Set” to a Split Endz (a precursor band of Neil’s) song “Four Seasons in One Day”. Even though the next night brought guest stars like David Byrne to the stage, throughout was full evidence of the humor and charisma of not only Neil, but the whole band, and that made it one truly special performance that all fans had to appreciate, especially in such a small venue with such a big glorious whimsical personality.”

Joe: The Antlers at Pier 54 on July 22nd

“Beating out two events featuring Best Coast, my show of the week belongs to The Antlers at Pier 54.  Hearing them perform live is an entirely different experience from listening to their studio material.  Quite frankly, trying to describe their live show in words would be doing the band a disservice.  All I can say is that if you ever have the opportunity to catch them live, take full advantage of it.”

Eric: Pigeon Religion @ Bruar Falls

Amber: The North Highlands at Rocks Off Boat Cruise on July 19th

I loved The North Highlands on the Guac Rock Rocks Off Cruise on July 19th. I came for the guacamole, I stayed for the awesome music, and I left with a kickass fake moustache.

We’ve got some amazing prizes this week including CMJ badges and tickets to Hot Chip, ZZ Top and Black Lips. So go to shows this week and post recaps on SuperGlued!
